Captain Paulus was once a member of Lyran navy. The second son in a noble Lyran house, his mother pushed him towards the navy because she thought it would be safer. Paulus rose in the ranks due both to his talent and his family’s social influence and was a captain on a transport jumpship by age 35. As the Lyran navy ramped up warship production after the Clan invasion, Paulus sought desparately to work his way into a leadership position on one of the new fighting vessels. However, his mother was busily working her own channels to ensure that he did not receive such a billet. Disgusted by being stonewalled at every turn, Paulus eventually gave up his military position and joined a merchant business as a jumpship captain, taking some slight pleasure in how much this annoyed his mother.

When the Flaming Devil Monkeys bought the vessel that Paulus had captained for the last twelve years from his employers, they offered him and his crew a position. He happily agreed. It still wasn’t a warship, but at least he would be back in the action under his own terms.

Captain Paulus still continues the traditions of a Lyran “social general.” He keeps a wine cellar on board the ship hosts a formal dinner with the crew once a week. Since joining the Monkeys, this tradition has shifted to include the FDM officers as well.
